TIE THE KNOT WITH BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS
Weddings and flowers go hand-in-hand.Ever since the ancient Greeks where brides wore crowns of fresh flowers and plants, the two have been synonymous.
In ancient times, brides also carried a bridal bouquet containing fragrant herbs and garlic which was believed to help fend off evil spirits.Sage was often included in the bouquet as it meant the bridal party would be blessed with wisdom.During Victorian times, different flowers meant different things, so brides carried posies that were specially arranged to send a coded message to the groom.
The term ‘flower girl’ also originates from Victorian England where a young girl would sprinkle petals on the path in front of the bridal party as they walked to the church. This was to ensure they had a life filled with flowers and happiness.
Today, there are no hard and fast rules. From traditional white arrangements to modern creations in vivid reds and oranges, the choice is huge with the only real constraint being budget, of course.Even though you may have set ideas as to how you would like your wedding flowers to look, it is advisable to chat to an experienced florist to get some input.
Many brides set their hearts on a certain type of flower to suit their theme. An important consideration however, is availability. Flowers are seasonal, yet many wedding planners overlook this fact.Out of season flowers will cost more and the quality may be questionable, so it makes sense to use blooms that are plentiful and reasonable.
A good florist will be able to advise on creating the look that you want using in-season flowers.Just because tulips are out of season, doesn't mean that your wedding will be a total flop ! There are so many varieties, colours and shapes of flowers, and so much can be done with interesting foliage, ribbon, fabric and other accessories.
A florist will tell you which flowers will suit your needs best. For example, gardenias look beautiful and smell gorgeous. However, these flowers go brown even when touched very gently so they aren't a great choice for bouquets.Stephanotis has similar characteristics, with delicate, fragrant flowers. Although a popular choice for bridal bouquets, in reality it’s not ideal as it browns and wilts due to body heat within a few hours, regardless of how well it has been handled.
Experienced florist, Sarah Ennis of Ennis Flowers, Perth, says a good relationship between the bride and the florist is vital. “A good florist will advise on quality, durability and pricing of wedding flowers as well as the most appropriate blooms to complement the colour scheme and theme.”
Orchids are a perenially popular choice for weddings, as are roses, tulips, calla lilies, gypsophila and daffodils."Yet people should be open-minded about their wedding flowers," she says "for example roses in February around Valentine's Day are very expensive and of variable quality.”
Since she's been a florist in Perth for years, she has a wealth of experience in advising on what are the best flowers to use in a bridal bouquet. It's recommended that the florist see a picture of the wedding dress as well as a piece of the fabric in order to choose the best types of flowers and colours. For example, a long, trailing bouquet will complement a full-length gown while a smaller posy or single bloom are more suitable to knee-length skirts.A bouquet that draws attention to the centre of the body should be avoided by fuller-figured women, whilst a long, trailing bouquet will make a bride appear to be thinner and taller.
Wedding flowers certainly set the mood. From the simplest celebration to the most elaborate, fancy affair, professional advice on wedding flowers in Perth will ensure it's the best day of your life.
