Building A Cat Run And Keeping Fourteen Cats
My wife and I have assisted with a cat charity in the Northern isles for almost a decade. Our home is a two bedroom cottage to which we have added a 40X20 yard cat run to keeo our 14 cats happy and safe. We've had to make some compromises to get along, arguably the worst of which is having a hatch open into the garden almost 24:7. Despite our living at 59 Degrees North, it only gets closed off when there is a very strong Northerly wind howling in the middle of winter and then only for an hour or two during the day.
We wanted a cat run that would last and we accomplishes this by digging and concreting in concrete security posts with their angled sections facing inwards. As the rock here is within inches of the surface, a powerful Valtra 4X4 tractor was brought in with a steel PTO drive auger. Even then the tractor managed to wear out an auger. We then put up chain link fencing supported by horizontal wires tensioned with raddles, topped initially with nylon netting and at the bottom with scaffolding netting the keep small animals out of the danger zone and stop the cats squeezing underneath. The nylon top netting needed replacing after a year and we opted for galvanised mesh which is still going strong after three years. The bottom scaffolding netting was more successful and plants soon grew into it and the adjacent fencing to make the join permanent. This served us well until we brought in a pair of young Toms who found a way to get out. We watched them escape and blocked each escape route with more mesh, but they kept finding new routes out. In the end we decided to fit them with shock collars which worked with a radio frequency antenna in the form of a wire that runs all the way round the outside of the cat run. With this system you can set how close they have to get to the antenna, set into the top of the fence; it then first warns the cat with an audible bleep followed, if the cat does not retreat, by increasingly strong electric shocks. We have had this system in place for three years and it has been 100% successful. The Toms are intelligent enough to know that, if you let them out without their collars on they can escape immediately - we keep them indoors to get some respite from the collars.
Obviously, with so many cats in so small an area there was going to be friction. Some products available on the market helped calm some of the more territorial and aggressive male cats down. The two we had most success with were Bach's Flower Remedy and Feliway. I can't recommend both products enough. When we have lapsed in their use, problems, paricularly persecution and how to stop a cat from urinating in the house have [reared their ugly heads. No single approach worked against this and we adopted various strategies simultaneously. We made sure there were sufficient litter trays and placed them in secluded locations dispersed throughout our home. The trays use non scented, wood based cat litter and are scooped daily and cleaned with detergent, bleach and enzyme based cleaner every three to four days. Any inappropriate urination is cleared up immediately, again using using enzyme based cleaner. If the cat has shown a preference for particular peeing location we either put down double-sided sticky tape, aluminium cooking foil or, most often, just place a food bowl there as cats will not pee where they eat. Wood effect lino, sealed to the skirting board replaced the carpet solving many of our problems - wallpaper was replaced with waterproof emulsion; another Godsend.
There are always enough bowls of food and water down, placed far enough apart that the cats don't disturb each other whilst eating. Two secondary feeding stations elswhere give the cats the option of biscuits and water whenever they want them. It's important to give every cat some attention every day to make them feel happy and wanted. The cat run gives them lots of outdoor play opportunities and the chance to relax in nests in the long grass without persecuting the abundant local ground nesting birds and other wildlife. Our only problem is that moving is out of the question - we can't bring ourselves to go through all that again!
