The Olympic Logo: Five Rings Of Awesome
Pierre de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympic games is also credited with the creation of one of the world's most recognizable logos. It may even be supposed that the logo is so synonymous with our view of the games, that it seems impossible to imagine Emperor Tiberius steering his four horse chariot, or Milo of Croton wrestling without being over-looked by the logo!
Despite this, a book published in the 1950s entitled 'The History of the Ancient Games' actually helped perpetuate the idea that the Olympic Logo originated in ancient Greece.. 'History of the Ancient Games' mistakes a symbol present in the ancient stadium of Delphi as proof of the connection, though it was actually constructed for the 1936 Olympics.! The 1936 Olympics are important for the Five-ringed logo for another reason: they marked the first time that the logo had seen much widespread use.. Therefore, we can be thankful that the large ammount of media coverage of this important, if turbulent games didn't smudge the image of the Olympic logo, even though it flew alongside other more controversial symbols.!
Of course, even with access to the best time machine pre-war money could buy, de Coubertin's custom logo design could have been met with the blank faces of ancient apathy.. Of the five continents of de Coubertin's design, only three were known to exist, and that's assuming that the concept of a continent a mass of outer earth crust surrounded by water and constantly floating around on the molten mantle had occurred to even the most enlightened minds of the ancient world.
So, which continent does each ring represent?? The Blue, Yellow, Black, Green and Red rings don't correspond with any flags, symbols or terrain in each contintent in any obvious way.! Before 1951, official Olympic handbooks claimed that the colors corresponded to Europe, Asia, Australia and America respectively, though this statement was removed and there was never any confirmation from de Coubertin that this was the case..
Nevertheless, the Olympic Rings are one of the world's most striking logo designs and they represent the importance of sport in the world community.. If only the puke-fuschia logo for the 2012 Olympics was half as simple¦
Exclusive Video Premiere: Dana Falconberry's "Petoskey Stone" (Bust)
I really dig the down-to-earth sound of singer-songwriter Dana Falconberry.
Her poetic lyrics and gentle, rich voice are perfect for a day inside, hiding
from the cold and rain. (The bluesy song "Baby Blue Sky" is particularly neat,
if you ask me.) Falconberry hails from Austin, TX, and according to her
website, her latest EP was recorded in an old church there. She's been touring
a lot and winning the hearts of critics and listeners alike, ...
